Editing & Proofreading Services

Publishers Planet provides different levels of editing services designed to fit your specific needs. We provide editing services for manuscripts, galleys, print ads, web sites, and any type of advertisement or business documents. If it’s written, we can edit it!

Your documents are edited using the Microsoft Word track changes feature (except for galleys). This Microsoft component allows you to quickly accept or reject changes proposed by the editor. Documents are edited using The Chicago Manual of Style, American Psychological Association (APA), or Associated Press (AP) style guide. Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition is our guide to vocabulary and spelling.

We prefer to evaluate your document/manuscript before giving you a quote. For first-time clients, we offer a free sample edit of one to five pages.

Copyediting vs. Proofreading

Most people, outside of the publishing industry, think copyediting and proofreading are two different words that mean the same thing. They are, in fact, very different. In simple terms: Proofreading involves checking for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and verb tense errors. Editing delves deeper into the document. An editor checks for consistency and readability, and suggests ways to improve the document for clarity.

Proofreading (all documents except for Galleys) – We check spelling, hyphenation, capitalization, punctuation, abbreviations, treatment of numbers, numbering of footnotes or endnotes, grammar, verb tense, and word usage. The table of contents is also checked to ensure it matches the content. Even though we will not be editing for content, the proofreader will point out anything that may be confusing to the reader.

Proofreading Galleys – We offer two different services for proofreading galleys. We can proofread the galley against the manuscript or do a “cold” read. A cold read does NOT compare “word-for-word” the galley against the manuscript. During a cold read, we only use the manuscript to identify whether an error is the author’s or the printer’s. The proofreader will only make changes if it will prevent confusion to the reader. We will not tamper with word choice or marginally incorrect punctuation (unless requested to do so). We check the copy for conformity to type specifications, margins, word spacing, repetitive word breaks, etc. Additional charges will be incurred for printing and shipping of the galley (or you may provide pre-paid shipping labels for your preferred carrier).

Light Copyediting – In addition to proofreading, we point out paragraphs that seem wordy or convoluted. We will also make suggestions to break up run-on sentences and suggest words that may be more suitable.

Medium Copyediting – In addition to the tasks for a light edit, we point out anything that seems wordy or convoluted, and supply suggested changes. We query any facts that seem incorrect, and query faulty organization and gaps in logic.

Heavy Copyediting – Includes everything contained in a medium edit. The difference is that we may rewrite anything that seems wordy or convoluted. We will verify and revise facts that seem incorrect; and query or fix any faulty organization or gaps in logic.

Developmental Editing – We will assist you with putting your book or document content in logical order. Editing services may also include a light, medium or heavy edit, or merely a proofread.
